The policy regarding minors would exclude most of the furs who would benifit the most from a local con.
Just one correction: there may be an occasional cash bar coordinated through the hotel, but the convention itself does not serve alcohol. Therefore there are no age restrictions, no carding (by us), and no policy regarding minors whatsoever.
I was referring to how anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, not carding for alcohol. It is a reasonable policy for your convention, but few of the younger furs around here show up with their parents blessing. (There are some, but I hear just as many furs admit that they sneak off to our events.)

You may be thinking of Midwest FurFest. I've confirmed it both with the convention head and the committee: anyone of any age can show up at Gaylaxicon without a parent (at least when it's run by us). There are no age restrictions.

I got that information from the 2009 program book. It's the most recent information I could access and I just assumed it wouldn't change.

I'm sorry, you're right. I was going on what I was told and hadn't checked the 2009 program. I've just talked with the con head and he wasn't familiar with that policy either. We have a committee meeting in November and I'm definitely going to bring it up. I understand why this is a very important point for furries.

I've talked with the Gaylaxicon committee and there is a lot of interest in revising or removing the current minor policy. It's pretty much never come up before and we would love to change it to welcome furries and to create a safe space for teenagers. But first there are logistics that need to be explored before we'll know what's possible. I was told to say it's "under serious advisement."

You may be interested in how other cons handle minors then. The last one I went to gave minors a different colored badge. Any adult areas had a staff member stationed at the door to make sure no minors entered. By using a different colored badge, only a single glance is needed and the whole process is unobtrusive.
Typically, minors need to provide a waiver when they register. Waivers are easier for most teens to obtain compared to convincing their parents to attend with them.

I'm happy to announce our Guests of Honor for Gaylaxicon 2012!
Kyell Gold is a prolific furry author with seven published novels and numerous short stories to his name. He specializes in using furry characters to explore gay relationship experiences in a variety of settings. Gold has won a record ten Ursa Major awards and was a finalist for the 2010 Small Press Award from the Washington Science Fiction Association.
Sofawolf Press is one of the most prominent publishers of comics and fiction focusing on anthropomorphic animals. Sofawolf is based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sofawolf publishes novels written by Kyell Gold and Kevin "Rikoshi" Frane and comics by Blotch, Leo Magna and Ursula Vernon among many others.
Wendy Pini introduced comic readers to the world of Elf Quest in 1978. As co-creator and artist, her stories were one time the most popular comic among female readers in the United States. In 2007 Wendy adapted Edgar Allan Poe's story, Masque of the Red Death, into a yaoi-inspired graphic novel and web comic set in seductive future utopia.
Gary Russell comes to us from the United Kingdom, where he has written many works of fiction and non-fiction for Doctor Who, Torchwood, Lord of the Rings, and has been, at various times, an editor, a producer, and a director for numerous science fiction ranges. He is also an avid collector of Converse All-Stars, and Marvel, DC, and Doctor Who action figures.
Lyda Morehouse is a local Twin Cities writer well known for her LINK Angel series, a blend of cyberpunk and the heavenly host. Her characters transcend the gender spectrum, and explore cross cultural religious themes. When she isn't pitting AIs against angels, she also writes supernatural romance novels under the nom de plume Tate Hallaway.
Prism Comics supports LGBT comics, creators, and readers through it's annual resource guide, active participation in San Diego Comic Con and other conventions, and its annual Queer Press Grant, which awards a $1000 grant to a comics creator who publishes a work of interest to an LGBT audience.
Our website is up at http://www.gaylaxicon2012.org I'm also on FA at http://www.furaffinity.net/use…..axicon2012 Please send me a message if anyone has programming or event ideas. As for figuring out the minor policy, it's slow going. We haven't finalized anything yet.
Edit: updated Kyell's Ursa Major count with his 2 wins from yesterday: http://sofawolf.livejournal.co…..31597.html

I checked out the CONvergence rooms for Gaylaxicon the last two years and had a very disappointing experience both years. They seem very clique-ish and not welcoming of newcomers. People I had chatted with last year wouldn't give me the time of day this year.
Also, the entry cost is far too expensive. They want half as much more as convergence to attend and I don't make enough to justify the expense.
If the registration fees were lower and the people more outgoing, I would consider attending, but it seems to be too expensive for such an atmosphere. I'll stick more reasonable cons in terms of cost and friendliness.

I'm very sorry you had a bad experience. Were any of the clique-ish people in the room wearing Gaylaxicon shirts? Because they were the actual con organizers and I'd be interested to hear if any of them (or me) were off-putting. Dimby and I were both at the door and we were trying to greet everyone who arrived. It was a pretty crazy night with the My Little Pony meet-up (and hence we had a lot of people who hung out for hours who weren't there for Gaylaxicon).
As for the price, CONvergence gets almost 5,000 memberships and can therefore keep prices low. Our goal in 2012 is to get 300 memberships and with such a lower number of attendees, we have no choice but to charge more. The Minneapolis organizers of Gaylaxicon put out a con that was in the black in 2009 and so they've found a formula that works. The higher registration cost is a necessary part of that. The bottom line is that we're a convention that's catering to a niche of a niche and to pay off hotel costs, we have no choice but to charge more.
We're a non-profit, fan-run organization and we're doing this out of the love of the GLBT fandom community and creating a safe space for us to thrive. I'm on the convention committee and the idea to attract furries to Gaylaxicon was entirely my own. Furries sometimes get dismissed in the geek community at large and I figure if there's any group that will be accepting of outsiders, it's the queer geek community. So the idea that we would be perceived as unwelcoming is distressing. If you're willing to talk about it, Dimby and I regularly go to furmeets or we can chat about it online. I'm pretty much flying by the seat of my pants in trying to make Gaylaxicon a place that furries will want to attend so I welcome all suggestions.

Please cite the "converted to for-profit" claim. One doesn't convert a 501(c)(3) to a for-profit. One has to disband, give the money to OTHER 501(c)(3) and start over. If you referring to what happen in 2009, MISFITs broke into GPS and Convergence Events. Both are 501(c)(3).

Crap, I feel like an idiot. I'm sorry, I don't know where I got that impression (probably the Inc. at the end–good thing I'm not on the business end of the committee). I've corrected my post.

Yah I was going to say. As a Convergence con com member this is news to me. The only thing that has drastically changed with Convergence is they are moving from a board driven even to a steering committee one, where the board steps back and will be leading other Convergence events in the coming years. But from a status they are still nonprofit.

And I meant no disrespect. CONvergence is always one of my favorite times of year. It has certainly influenced how we run Gaylaxicon.

We never assumed so. We just wanted clarification. And I agree naming it "CONvergence Event, Inc" was a bit confusing for most until you realize "Incorporated" basically means a "legal entity" and doesn't infer what type of entity.
And I'm sure CONvergence influences how a lot of larger twin cities events in our community are ran (including a few, "no way in hell will we do it how CONvergence does it." =).
Anyways, back to your topic..

Well, the main issue was that that was the general attitude I received from the group as a whole. I felt that the purpose of the suite was to be welcoming and let everyone know what the organization was about, but there seemed to be little discussion on that. Instead, people either huddled together in small groups that ignored everyone else, or sat there watching 'My Attrocious Pony' and not chatting at all. I just didn't feel very welcomed.
Also, for me, $$$ is an issue that prevents me from attending events of that financial scale.
To answer though, the staff wasn't any more welcoming that the other guests.

I brought up your concerns with the committee and we'll definitely put more thought into our layout next year. Whatever we show onscreen (probably just music videos or something) will be projected and out of the way. That way people won't have to step in front of a TV to get anywhere in the room. Hopefully that will allow everyone to mingle more, including the convention staff. Dimby and I will try harder to greet everyone individually as well.
As for the price, there's nothing I can do about that. We do have an active coupon code right now on our Comic-Con flyers: SDCC2011 That will get you a registration for $65 through July 29: http://www.gaylaxicon2012.org/…..Itemid=114 Talk to me at the Furmeet on Saturday if you want to pay in cash and avoid the fee.
