Location Location Location – this is what limits MNFurs from doing more events. MNFurs group is always looking for new location to run events at around metro area and the whole of Minnesota. This can be anywhere from real "ballroom"/"Convention" spaces to restraunts.
Since it's always an ongoing process you can help!
If you have idea of spaces that need to be investigated please reply to this thread so we can check it out. Or you can send a message directly to me and I will make sure it goes to the right people.
The more detail you can provide the better we can evaluate the place and figure out if it is a good fit for an event.
Remember this can be for like a off meet event like bowling, or just another place for food like Perkins or a full blown mega event like a picnic or a hotel meet. Anything is appreciative.
Thanks for your help!

How much does it cost to rent out hotel areas (the "mini cons," sorry Kellic) and the picnic area? Personally I really only enjoy the picnic meets, I'd be down with trying to do another one or two a year…
Maybe an actual spring picnic (in spring, like April or May), then another in June/July, then the fall in September…?

I feel we should really focus on doing something this winter :) to break it up, you know? We have plenty of events that can and are done during Spring-Fall, but winter seems to always be lacking in fun activities all around. I wonder if the Thunderbird…er…Ramada Inn by the airport is desperate enough for some cash to make a deal with us for something cheap for a group space. I'd leave that one up to Kellic, as I am certain he hates that building with a passion of a thousand suns. XD
Otherwise, just need to keep checking hotels for spaces. I'm betting they will have some decent deals for the more unpopular winter months to try and get buisness. I'll try looking around and see what I can find as well. :)

There is more driving involved for most of us, but another option would be to grab one of the DNR group centers for one or two nights. The price is right at $5 a head and provides lodging and a dining hall with kitchen. Most of them shut down for the winter, but Whitewater remains open all year. The capacity of each varies from 60 to 215.

The Thunderbird is not a go which is the reason the Hotel Meet fell through. They are in the process of Liqudation to be honest as they've been sold off to a holdings company. There are other hotels around we are looking into however. More or less this was to get an idea of places OTHER then the Thunderbird. We do want to find a venue for a winter event again early next year, yes.
I'll enhance on what Kurst posted here on details on what we are looking for in an event or hotel space:
-A room or series of rooms capible of handling 150-200 people
-open food policy (This was another reason we couldn't find a venue is Kellic was unwilling to go to any place that did not have an open food policy. Personally I think this can be discussed whether people are willing to go without snacks and order off a menu if we can get a venue for the right price…)
-Will let us stay there late, not having a kickout time of like 9pm.
Basically if people know of/find places that meet these criteria I can scout them out and try to see what sort of prices we can expect. We need to find a venue we can afford with our group and is available on a meet night. There were fewer places open on the Halloween weekend because it was a party weekend as a result. Getting it in the mid-winter shouldn't be as hard.
Doing it at a hotel rather then a restaurant with a banquet hall or a reception hall (like a lions club, etc) is a preferable option simply because if people stay late and want a crash space they can rent a room from the hotel rather then having to go home. It also gives more options to include people from the greater minnesota area and neighboring states to attend the event.

So the thunderbird wasn't available. Didn't anyone look at any other hotels before now?

Thunderbird had some good relations with one of our members one of the reason Kellic was going towards that. Sadly that's not going to be as useful now.
It's always apprecetive to help check locations. With something that's a "hotel" meet a mega event type thing it doesn't have to be centrally located. Being off the beaten path might even help.
Check with Yarrick on where he has check he's checked a lot of hotels.

I personally do not know how much we checked this path. I know the less than 80 wouldn't be too useful unless we had an RsVP but MNFurs events are tried to be kept as open as possible.

Not 100% what I was "looking" for I'm trying to think globally and generally. This also includes mini events like the Sushi/Tepin. night, other places to hold bi-weekly events and just plan fun things.
But more places and more locations to look at is always good :)

Following up on Aerak here for a while we have been looking at nearly 10-15 hotel type spaces a month. We have a large idea of the more "reasonable price" places but to be honest we don't go talk to the downtown Westin for these types of events ;)

Maybe an actual spring picnic (in spring, like April or May), then another in June/July, then the fall in September….
Since kellic hasn't applied roughly each picnic cost between $100-200 once the expenses and such factor into play.
The times for the picnic can be reserved by people in Saint Paul in January everyone else at least a month after.
So basically we get the scraps the last year(s) on the date for the seasons the park is available and I believe there is a limit of about 100 people at the park pavilion.
For restraunts – Perkins been nice to us and hasn't asked for miniumn food purchases. Other locations we went to or talked to had minimum purchases. A lot with as big or bigger rooms require the party to buy at least $250 worth of food each time we would meet there. And of course how long you can have the room. NEedless to say at this point in our group we don't want to commit to something like that.
For hotel meets – That's a toughy! When we had a sweet heart deal either by luck of schedule or we knew a friend of a friend it came out to be around $150-300. Most hotels we talked to in the last few months go from $800 with all food purchased from them or a major minimum food purchase (They expect a more banquit style from them. Think weddings) or double that without food purchase. You also have to take in account a lot of the places do expect you out like at midnight or 1am so getting a places willing to stay open late or overnight is important in this too.
Anyways hope that helps.

Yes, that was in regards to laying out what we are looking for in a space for a LARGE events. I felt it a good idea to give people an idea what we are looking for in that regards too. I will of course be looking at more venues for a larger, perhaps winter event coming up here soon.
Smaller events will be their own thing and require a lot less prep and very little if any dipping into the group funds to do. They can also be done on shorter notice as well. IE lets go see such and such movie next Friday for whomever is interested at theather x. Pretty simple and straightforward.
Should almost be split off into two different threads: one for hotel/large meet and possibly alternate meet-meet locations and smaller off meet events that can be a spur of a moment thing. The whole point is to encourage input and get people throwing around ideas and suggestions for BOTH at any rate however. Keep them coming :)

Is there a coliseum of any kind around (forgive me, I'm still learning about what's available here in MN)? I was thinking of the little coliseum we had down South, and how my grandparents were in a Scottish organization. They reserved a big room for a conference of some sort at the coliseum there. It was a pretty decently sized room, even though the coliseum itself isn't very large. I figure, here in the metro area, if there's a coliseum or something similar, their rooms could be larger than that. I thought I'd toss that out there in case it could help.

Well, we also have to keep into considerations price, space and availability. Perkins has been going well due to the general concensus of price, food, etc is OK.
I would possibly recommend a movie meet here and there? :O Plenty of space, reasonably priced (matinée)

Yeah… I'm not really sure how much something like the coliseum conference room would cost. I was too young to be listening out for any kind of figures back when the one I went to was going on. So I dunno…
Your idea of a matinee movie sounds good. :)

My first thought was community center. I know that they probably close a bit earlier than we'd like, but I dunno. The price might be right?

I've already looked into some community centers. They are usually really expensive for what we want to do. (Thousands of dollars sometimes.) Also, many of them insist on using their catering services. They are usually being used for weddings and other large banquets. Maybe some of the older community centers would have some affordable space available, but I haven't found them yet.

Two notes, we haven't stopped looking. Infact I'm going to start looking much harder at other hotel venues and such come next week.
The other note is that I might have found a few more restaurants to seriously look at. They are, however on the St Paul side of the metro; but have more space then perkins. El Toro may have failed, for a number of reasons, but I'd still like to experiment and try again someday at a different venue then Perkins to mix things up.
I will keep people informed of what I find!

Morris is kind of small, but there are a couple nice parks for relaxing or chatting or outdoor games like ultimate frisby or soccer or something, and the main park has a nice big ampitheater if anyone plays music and needs somewhere to play. There's also a few really nice little resteraunts in town, nothing that'd be good for major events as far as I know, but there's a top-notch China Buffet in the mall – Top notch for me, anyway, I've never been to another one before…
The campus has an outdoor garden that's really very pretty when it's in bloom, another nice little place for small meetings or hangouts… Sorry if these aren't what you had in mind ^^; I'm just trying to contribute however I can..
