Looks like sony has taken Everquest 2 into the Free to Play realm.
EQ2 Extended just in beta and is the original EQ2 game made free with some micropurchases and an option subscription for other things.
To read more information check out Everquest 2 Free To Play Page to see how they are doing it. I got an account an character going myself. But it's more fun for me to watch how they are handling the model for EQ2 and compare it to their Star Wars, Freerealms models and of course see how it compares to D&D Online.
I have a feeling they will be changing parts of their plans too. The restrictions on the classes is silly for a F2P model – I wouldn't mind paying money to unlock those. They really need to look at DDO for ideas. But it's a lot of content for free so I think if they can figure out if it's a trully extended trial or a true to F2P and communicate it to the customers it will be very interesting.
Though…. What about vanguard free to play would be nice ;)
Update to Opinion
They annouced that they are going to unlock the classes to be a one buy thing that was my major downer with the game at this point in it's Free 2 play state. So my complaints are pretty much off the board on that one and yes it sounds like they are listening to the community on this so I'm happier with it.

Well, as I said, I may be looking into giving this a try. Sounds pretty cool. Assuming that there are multiple servers, what are you on so that others can join on the same one? It's way more fun to play these sorts of things with friends, after all.

I tryed the free to play EQ2 a couple days ago. I was rather impressed by the improvements to the game since I played (around release). No flying fish that I could see. What I didn't like are class and race restrictions. Overall, if I were to play EQ2 again I'd rather just play on a normal account.
