I was talking to quite a few other people in the community and this came up~ A few fur communities around the nation have been coming up with official fursuit communities for local charity/volunteer work. For example; http://www.wildrosecritters.com/
The idea crossed my mind. We have enough people in the community who suit. And why not make a good name for us while donating time/money to charities? We should come up with our own official community with a name and the whole nine yards! (Just an idea :B)
So, what do you guys think? :D

I personally think it's a good idea, even though I feel like I'm something of an outlier to the community. I would love more opportunities to do volunteer and charity activities, the ZooBoo was a blast.

We're already doing this piecemeal, may as well pull everything together and organize. No need to limit ourselves to fursuiting though, we have other skills that can be used for charity work.

Again a lot of other groups across the nation have been doing this for years. We just never formally said lets start doing it.
Again it's about charity and stuff. It doesn't have to be suiting but it can be fun outlet for people to do.
Indirectly when we do the Como ZooBoo we do that.
Anyways it would be interesting to start a branch up to do that. I would help on the online resources for it.

More I think about it at this point we should look how as individuals we can do more with organziations to build up trust before we do more as a group.
Again, I really do like helping organizations and charities it just usually these organizations are built after individuals work with a bit unofficially.

I'm all for community service. I think it would give the MN furs a good face. I would also like to be able to participate in the community service event even though I don't intend on wearing a fur suit. Then again, my idea of serving the community is picking up trash along roads and highways, and I know how snappy the Guinness suit would look wearing an international orange vest.

So, what exactly would we be doing for charity? Entertaining kids?

Primarily suiting for events~ Humane Society events, Children's Hospital visits, etc etc.
Possibly raising money for organizations and performing for charity events.
The whole idea will take a year to get rolling (or so). So it's just a thought for the time being. :> Just tossing it out to see how many people I can get involved in the community for volunteer/charity events.

Do they want us there? I mean, I love that we want to get involved, but is there any real benefit to places like the humane society in having us around in suit?
Serious question, not trying to berate anyone or what they like to do here.

Unless we did a poor job of explaining what we do, it would be very rare for a charity to turn down free entertainment. Entertainment draws in a crowd and that is one of the most important goals of a charity.
They may not want us to participate in everything, but in general most charities will have something we can help out with.

I think we should really get this going! We have so many awesome fursuiters who all seem very willing to help out and I am sure that there will be organizations out there that would love to have us promoting their cause! I know quite a few other fursuit groups in other states/countries that do chairity work and I think it would be a good idea to get in contact with a few of them and see how they went about it!
Another thing I have talked about with Aerak and Kurst in the past is getting back in touch with Como Zoo. They have been nice enough to lend their service for the Zoo Boo events during October, I'd love if more of us could get involved with that and maybe help with other events they may have during the year to promote their zoo and raise money! (Though maybe this means I should get a more recognizable animal for a fursuit, not certain they have any dragon expibits there…yet >_>..<_<…) Either way, I think it's a good idea to have an official fursuit group for Minnesota doing chairty work and I hope to see this start going in the right direction, with all of our help, by this summer!
::Note: We also need handlers, so if you don't have a fursuit, please don't feel left out! We need nice people to make sure we keep hydrated, that our necks are tucked, and that we don't accidently step on small children =3 This is a group effort for all of us!

Another possibility, the International Wolf Center. They run a number of fundraiser events down here in the cities, some of which may be compatible with us. I know some of their events are outdoor walk-a-thon type deals that have people milling around at the beginning, they might appreciate some pre-exercise photo ops. And since the public tends to mistake most of our suiters for wolves anyways, that may be a good fit. (Unless you're supposed to be a white wolf, then you're a polar bear.)
It may also help that some of us are members of the IWC.
And then there are always the connections we have with local groups. I may be able to make arrangements with the area scout council. I have some good connections and they allready know about our fursuiting.
