Good afternoon everyone,
So many of you have been wondering, and posting, about when and where the Spring MNFurs picnic was going to be. The main reason we, well, I haven’t posted it was that St. Paul does not allow non St Paul residents to reserve a site prior to February 1st. (I asked around to try and find someone who was in St Paul, no dice.) So this past Monday I was able to reserve it and here is the official thread. *drum roll please*
I’m proud to announce the return to Hidden Falls Regional park for the 10 year anniversary of MNFurs first picnic in 2004. Yes technically last September during the convention, literally to the day, would have been the “official” date. But we had a convention instead. I don’t think people complained. 😉Anyways here are the particulars for your calendar:
Who: ANYONE!
What: MNFurs Picnics: 10 years in the making
When: Saturday May 16th, 2015 from 11AM – 9:30PM (Setup 10AM-11AM / Cleanup from 9:30-10PM)
Where: Hidden Falls Regional Park (North Entrance)
Where (Address): 1313 Hidden Falls Drive, Saint Paul, MN 55116
Where (Map): https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zD_xUKdSiUe0.k_ElLlMuynfsWhy: Because its trees, outdoors, and noms, and drinks, and friends, and stuff.
Expect further details and shout out requests for noms, and picnic wares sometime in the March ~ April time frame. we are going to attempt to organize the type of food that shows up, within reason. As much as I love my sugar, having every fur bouncing off the trees in the park would be…..bad. =P
If you have any questions…..shoot!
Very cool I’m comming!Haha!!!! On my birthday! I am looking forward to it! X3Alright, looking forward to the picnic. Right in my neck of the woods!I recall numerous stories about how the park was small in accomodation in comparison to what was a relatively smaller function a number of years ago. With our much larger group now, is that a concern to take note of?I recall the cops showed up at the 2011 meet too, because we were too big even then, and they asked how many people we had.
I’d strongly suggest reconsidering location for the sake of the some 200 people that show up to these picnics, for their comfort, and to avoid repeats of years past. Black Hawk has been an incredibly successful, expansive, accommodating park for us. French Regional is also a great location that’s very open and accommodating as well. Both of these other locations are out and away from the city bustle, and out of the way of the general public moreso. I can’t speak for the rest of the MSP population, but I’d imagine things might get crowded at a nice park on weekends, especially in a park that’s close.
Consider reconsidering.
I am not too familiar with this park as it was 2011 and I was not with MNFurs then…What is this park like?

I left the last picnic that took place at this park early due to the overcrowding and generally feeling uncomfortable after the police showed up (even if it was for a benign reason). I was rather hoping we wouldn’t be using this park again for picnics.First. We never get 200 people at the picnic at one time. As someone who has literally sat there and counted several times over the course of the day we get about 100-130 at any one time. With the total being around 200 in general. When we left there we were around 200 total for the weekend. We didn’t leave because it was getting too crowded. We left because they were expensive. We’ve grown, and our org can afford it now.
We are going back there because it was the first location of these picnics 10 years ago. This is just as much an homage to where we all started as much as anything else.
I’m sorry if you guys feel its too tight a fit. But its a park. You don’t have to sit in one location. There is plenty of space to spread out. And honestly part of the reason we are going back here is to move the location around. We’ve been having the picnic in the south metro. Time to send it closer to central to allow others in the North to attend.

Moki will likely be making an appearance this year c:We’ve been having the picnic in the south metro. Time to send it closer to central to allow others in the North to attend. -Kellic
So playing devils advocate cause I can….
Are we just attempting to have central metro (MSP) be where all events are now? I understand originally we had one picnic north and one south in order to even out the driving (also why one was more west and one more east). With the Convention taking place in Bloomington (south) it made sense that the picnic would be north. However, now the Con is dead center Minneapolis, and the picnic is also centered. Are you guys kinda just planning on the two major events (Con and picnic) instead of 3 now? (Con, picnic, picnic) and making them center focused, or planning on eventually spreading them out again? (center con, North picnic, south picnic).
In less D.A fashion:
I was only at the 2011 picnic for a short time due to family….issues and ended up leaving before the police came. My only issue was trying to find the way OUT of the park when I left lol. Got lost a little, but managed. If we have a particularly hot picnic day, do we know if the river in that area is good for swimming?
Wut o.o
Im Sike AND Banana
Two things: This is only affecting the SPRING picnic. For THIS year only. We are again- trying it.There is a good possibility of having a Fall Picnic as well with a venue and date TBD. That will NOT be happening at Hidden Falls.
Secondly, there is this huge thing about the Cops showing up at our last Picnic at Hidden Falls. We have, as of right now had the Police show up to a MNFurs Picnic THREE times and private security once. This was NOT a unique thing to Hidden Falls.
We had the Sheriff show up at Sucker Creek park when we had it in Vadnais Heights. We had the City Police show up yes at our Beloved Blackhawk park once. We had the Private Park Security show up at French Regional atleast once. All three times they were there for a purpose, we abliged, and they went on their way and the Picnic went as normal after we did what they needed us to do. This is a pretty standard thing.
