I have plenty of ideas for things to do outdoors to fill up the year with an event every month, but I wanted to go over my current plans to get an idea of which activities interest people the most. I’m also open to suggestions for types of activities I haven’t included yet. If it’s something I’m capable of running I may be able to work it in. These dates and activities are still being planned and are subject to change.

Hiking and biking are fairly easy to arrange, so those are currently going to make up the majority of these events.

If you have an interest in these outdoor adventure type events, this is a great time to voice your thoughts. I’m using this year to get an idea of what might work for the community in the long run. You can reply here or speak to me in person at an event. (The next one is in April.) The more people I get a response from, the easier it will be to make events people will enjoy. Pass the word on to people who may not see this post.

May 7th – Hiking at Interstate State Park (spring wildflower season)
June 24th – Biking on the Gateway and Brown’s Creek trails
July 15th – Disc Golf, location pending (I have a good lead on selecting a location, just waiting to confirm it)
August 6th – Archery, location pending
September 24th – Canoeing/Kayaking down the St. Croix River (From Interstate to William O’Brien State Parks)
    October 21st – TBD
    November – TBD
    December – TBD

    I'm just a Hodgepodge.

I’m always partial to archery myself but I think I’m kind of rare in that.

Vellus and I are both novice archers. I’m sure we would love to come to an archery event. Rock climbing would be fun too. Vertical endeavors maybe?

I would love to have a day of archery. I bought a bow recently and would appreciate some tips. That and it’s just plain fun.

Vertical Endeavors is something I haven’t done in a long time. That would be something good to do during the winter months when it’s harder to plan outdoor activities.

Archery is something I would have to research a little bit. My experience with archery is limited to scout camps, so I don’t actually know what would be the best way to set up an archery event for our group. There’s enough interest though, so I’ll look into it.

Thanks! There are a number of archery spots in parks and such around the Twin Cities that are free and for public use. I am not sure if they could be reserved or we just show up and shoot with whatever targets are available.

As long as people follow some basic safety rules we will be fine. One issue I see would be bow rental. I suppose people could borrow bows from members that have one of their own, but the draw length is personalized which could make things difficult for someone else. My bow is also left-handed, for example. But I am sure something can be arranged. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

I did see the free public archery ranges. I’ve actually stumbled onto one before, from the wrong end though. (Thankfully, nobody was out practicing that day.) Worst case we can do something with one of those locations.

The issue with bows is the main thing I need to get sorted out. I prefer to keep these events as open as possible to ensure that even people with no experience can join in. That probably means trying to find a place that has a selection of bows and maybe even an instructor to offer guidance. I’m sure there’s something out there, but the cost is going to play a role in what we end up doing. I’ll get in touch once I’ve informed myself a bit more and know what I actually need.

You know, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel.  We’re close with GPS yes?  They have an archery group.  Geek Physique Archery.  Could maybe tag along with one of their events.  I haven’t heard from them lately so I think they’re still on winter break.

Any kind of event we come up with, we could find a group that already does it to tag along with. That’s not the goal of what I’m trying to do here. I’m planning events specific to furries. The purpose of this whole endeavor is to see what we can do for ourselves within the local fandom, to see what we can do to make these activities an expression of our fandom. I’m looking to see if we have the foundations for what may become a larger effort to explore what it means to be a furry in the outdoors.

The goal is, in fact, to reinvent the wheel so that it has a bit of fur on it. That said, if anybody needs more archery in their life, you now know another place to look.

After sleeping on it, I feel that my previous response was a bit off.

Thanks for the suggestion Snow, as it would be the easy way to have an archery event. It’s just not what I want. I haven’t explained any of my larger picture motives yet since I figured it was more info then was needed at this point, the first step is to simply see if we can run a sufficient array of these kinds of events. My apologies if my previous response sounded harsh or defensive in any way.

hi im new here, verry excited to see this stuff being talked about. i ran an archery group for a couple of years so i might be of some help.

we.typically went to the lake calhoon range by the cemetary) because its big and open, and is a place where we could also do areal shooting (throwing up disks and shooting at them, safely ofcourse) when no one else was there.

I have an assortment of recurve bows that people could borrow, unfortionatly only right handers currently. the nice thing about recurves is they can be shot by anyone and dont need to be set up like compounds do..i also.have a few compounds if people want to try those and they happen to be the right draw weight / length.

arrows are actually a problem because they are a bit more specific to the shooter and bow with traditional bows than they are with compounds, but in my experience people just starting out are not accurate enough to really be able to tell the difference between an arrow thats matched well and one that isnt (myself included probably, being so out of practise;). i have  a fair number of arrows set up for my bow that i can loan, but after having allot of people loose them, i decided i needed to charge for lost arrows ($15 each i think i figured was the overall cost).

id be happy to instruct people.in the technique im familiar with,.which is instinctive shooting.

I have also done other primitive projectile weapons.at that range such as sling, blow guns, atl atl and throwing sticks, if anyones intrested.

As for on the archery, I have three quick thoughts:

    1. Geek Physic is something I’ve read online about, and they too have issues of more enthusiasts than people with equipment (bows & arrows) to share and give everyone a chance to participate.
    2. I recently made 2 DIY bows that are good for about 15-20 yards with estimated 30-40lb draw (I think closer to 30 for mine). These were about $20 in supplies from Menards. As nothing fancy, they work for left or right hand shooters. Cheap arrows were a bigger cost than these bows. These are okay for up to 30″ draw – they’re made for simple fun, honestly.
    3. I’d be willing to help with organization on an archery event as well, provided we look at the free parks for now.

I went to the range on France Ave (near Normandale College) and I know of one further south in Bloomington. We would definately need to plan to take turns shooting at the targets (4 available) so we respect other people who use the park range. I was also told by a regular at the France Ave range that the targets are well spaced for safety. At Bloomington, the targets are a bit too close and every has to shoot in rounds at the same time and call clear for arrow retrieval. I haven’t gone to check this myself yet.

I’m onboard to look for the hiking events or an archery event.

Between here and the modest amount of research I have managed to do so far, I’m starting to get some ideas for how we can do some archery events. Right now I see three paths available to starting out these events for our group.

    1. Share somebody’s archery equipment. (Low cost, low effort, not the best individual results)
    2. Have people make their own archery equipment. (Modest cost, higher effort, fair individual results)
    3. Rent equipment at a range that provides lessons. (Modest cost, low effort, good individual results)

The best option for us may actually be a combination of all of these paths. It kind of depends on how much interest we actually have, and that has been rather hard to determine so far. (I’m pretty convinced that I’m not reaching a lot of people with these forum posts, I’m going to find out at the picnic.) Here’s the current plan I’m thinking of, something that may be best if we have at least five new people interested.

As a group we sign up for lessons at an indoor range. (Average Joes Archery seems like a good deal) This allows everyone to get a chance to start out with a properly fit bow, everybody gets lessons from people who teach archery for a living, and we don’t actually have to do anything other than show up. This makes it an easy archery event to get people started.

Afterwards we can have a workshop where people have a chance to make their own archery equipment if they don’t want to buy it ready made. This would have to be done separate from an actual archery event, maybe a week or two before.

Then we have an archery event out at a range. At this point, anybody without equipment would have to borrow it from other people. Likewise, anyone who didn’t attend the class would need a quick lesson before the event starts, which is where those of you with experience come in. There are a few options available at this stage as to where we go to shoot, and we’ll have plenty of time to sort that out. I personally am intrigued by the field archery course at Elm Creek. It is, however, not free with a $6 pass required and I don’t know how busy it gets.

As for the timing of when this may take place, the classes are only offered on certain days, and there are only two dates left with spots open. May 21st (6 spots) and July 29th (20 spots). There are other options for group lessons, but they aren’t as comprehensive or cost effective. May won’t give people enough notice from the picnic, so we would have to shoot for July.

That would mean that, out of the dates I selected earlier as good dates to run events, the first archery event we could run on our own would be October 21st. That would likely be the last for the season as well unless we move indoors, which costs even more money. There are of course a few more weekends available if you don’t mind bumping into meets, convention meetings, and a few weeks when I’ll be out of state, and thus unavailable to help run the events.

Even with help, I’m trying not to run too many events too often until we have a solid understanding of community interests. That means we will have more limited opportunities for this year at least, next year may be different. If we do manage to get a small core of people who want routine archery opportunities though, a midweek evening archery meet may be your best bet. That is something I will likely leave up to you guys.

Let me know what you guys think of this plan or if you have something else in mind.

While looking at archery stuff, I was reminded that disc golf is a thing. That may also be a future event.

Just a note on July. I was kind of waiting to see if a certain campground was going to reopen after being closed for construction last year. That hasn’t happened yet, so I’m still pondering my plans for July 15th. Maybe disc golf? I will probably be running a number of snowshoe making workshops in July for a future event at various times of the week/month. There’s still a lot that has to happen before I can commit to those workshops though. Yes, I know it’s strange to be thinking about snowshoeing in July, but I do have my reasons for this.
