    Chapter 1

The sun was shining brightly on the clear, cool autumn day. The birch and deciduous trees gleamed with their beautiful gold, green, red, & orange fall colors. The leaves continued to fall to the forest floor and dance in the wind. The lake was calm and the day was perfect, for some at least.

In the forest, a green blur was pounding across the forest. The pound of his feet could be herd and felt from the highest tree tops. He was a timber wolf, but due to his coloring, he was not a normal wolf. His top coat was a lush color of forest green and his undercoat was snow white. He was muscular and his body showed that he had great power.

As he pounded through the forest, leaping over rocks and hurtling over fallen trees, he sent a message to the forest that signaled urgency. Everyone that herd it knew by the uneasiness that something terrible was about to happen.

After a few minutes of non-stop running, the wolf jumped into a thicket of bushes and lay in a position that almost seemed like a striking position. As he laid there, he herd two men walking toward him and talking in a lone tone of voice. Both men looked to be in their late 30’s and were dressed in camouflage. One was of a short and fat stature, while the other had the outlook appearance of a large grizzly bear.

As the men got closer to the bushes, their conversation was much clearer.

“So all we have to do is chop down a few trees for a few hundred bucks”, asked the fat man to his associate.

“That’s right”, said the bear man. “The white collar prick said if we disrupted the land a little, he’d pay us $500 each.”

“Wow! I could pay off my wife’s alimony payment and still have a little left over for poker night.”

“Shh”, the bear man put a finger to his lips as to make the fat man keep his voice down. “We got to be careful. I got a feeling we’re being watched.”

“Oh, come on. Who could possibly be out here in the middle of the woods? We’re so far off of the main trail, no hiker or ranger is ever going to know a thing. Plus, we’ve been back here enough to be able to get in and out with no trouble.”

“Yeah, I guess you have a point. But we can’t let our guard down.”

The wolf got ready to leap out of the bushes and strike the men in less than a minute. This was the danger she told him about and the wolf knew he had to stop these men from their first strike.

The two men ventured a little further into the woods until they reached a small birch tree. It was thick like most of the other birches around it, but it was only half the size to its towering brothers and sisters. However, there was something special about this tree and the ones around it. The men could not see the special quality, but the wolf could see it as brightly as the day he was standing in.

The bear man got close to the tree and the fat man stood a few steps away from him. The wolf kept a keen eye on the tree and the bear man and slowly began to position his body. The fat man began to scan the area in order to keep a close eye on any sort of danger that may appear before them. The bear man reached into his jacket and pulled out a small axe. The blade was sharp and the handle was a smooth, polished wood handle. With the axe in hand, the bear man slowly positioned himself to begin chopping down the small birch tree in front of him.

It was in that moment that the wolf leaped out from his hiding place and ran toward the tree. The fat man tried to speak to warn his associate, but the wolf was too fast for him to see and before he could open his mouth, the wolf was already staring down the bear man. The bear man saw the wolf’s golden eyes and felt the warning that the wolf had in its soul burn into his heart. The wolf lunged at the bear man and seized the axe from the bear man’s hands. The bear man tried to fight the wolf from taking it away from him, but the wolf was too powerful for his flabby arms. The wolf wanted to let the men know he was too powerful for them and with a swift movement of leaping away from the bear man; he stood before them with the axe in its jaws. As he growled at the two men, he swiftly snapped his jaws shut, which in turn snapped the axe in two.

The fat man began to feel the fear the wolf wanted them to succumb to and began to run for his dear life. But the bear man did not feel fear. He had faced tougher foes than this and was not afraid of some strange looking wolf. He began to pick himself up and then in turn struck a fighting stance similar to a bear. Without the axe, the bear man had no other option than fighting hand to hand and show his true characteristics. Now the scene was set for something that looked like a fight between the forest’s greatest rivals; the bear and the wolf.

The wolf stood its ground and began to growl and snarl. He did not wish to fight the men; he just wished to warn them to not harm the forest. The bear man began to lunge at the wolf. The wolf quickly moved out of the bear man’s way and soon a rock was revealed. The wolf wanted to show some form of intelligence and his trap worked. The bear man was moving to quick for him to move his massive body out of harm’s way and so, with a thud the man fell face first into the rock.

The bear man now lay silently on the ground. The wolf began to walk over to the bear man. The wolf looked the bear man up and down and noticed something peculiar about the bear man’s head. Blood was trickling down the bear man’s face. The wolf could not tell if this meant the bear man would live or die, but the wolf never asked for death to happen to the humans he fought against today, she would never speak to him again if such a thing happened. The wolf brought his nose close to the bear man’s head and began to sniff the spot that the blood was coming from. From the smell, he could tell that the bear man would live but not for very long. Since he did not want him to suffer, he did the only thing he could do and proceeded to lick the wound and clean the blood that was on his face. The wolf continued to do this until the blood that he found was gone and the wound stopped bleeding, then the wolf took one last look at the bear man. He knew that they would most likely cross-paths again and wanted to make sure to memorize his gruff looking face. After the image was burned into his memory, he quickly ran out of sight so as not to have the bear man see him. The last thing the wolf wanted was another confrontation with the bear man after he had healed him.

The bear man awoke an hour later lying in a confused state. As he slowly got up, he tried to look for his friend, the fat man, and the green that he fought. Neither were in sight and the bear man realized he was alone in the woods. As he started to get his Barings, he began to feel a little dizzy. He went to grab his head and noticed it was wet. He took his hand off of his head and brought it toward his face. He noticed that there was a small red dot on his middle finger and he then realized he had bled from hitting the rock hard. He was surprised he was still living after hitting the rock really hard, and began to feel relief, though something else troubled him, as smelt something along with blood on his finger. He brought his hand back to his face and began to smell the tip of his finger. After taking a few seconds to decipher the smell and found that along with blood he could smell the scent of a canine. His thoughts began to swirl as he came to realize that the green wolf he had just fought saved his life while he was knocked out. “Why did it do such a thing”, the bear man thought to himself.

As the bear man continued to ponder this thought, he began to wandered over to where his axe lay or what was left of it. The wooden handle was in splinters and was completely beyond repair. The bear man then had the confrontation with the green wolf replay in his mind over and over. His head began to burn and ache and he soon realized he would find himself fighting the green beast once again. He stood up straight and began to spread his legs so he could anchor himself and scream so everything could hear him for miles around. He wanted to make sure that if it was still watching him through the trees, it would hear him and the message of revenge he was about to give.

“I have fought many animals here on the north shore”, he began to say in his low gruff voice. “But none have ever made such a fool out of me. Mark my words you green demon, I will find you and kill you for the mockery you made of me!”

At that moment, he let out a roar that made the whole forest come alive and tremble at the fearful, rage filled message of revenge he released.

Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Till your good is better, and your better is the best.
