Yep, just as the title says.
    ——–
My boyfriend’s parents are heavily involved with the curling club here and know the owner pretty well. Getting the building rented out for one day may not be a problem.  Because the curling season is coming to an end, this will have to be planned for NEXT YEAR; a nice amount of time to get more participants and notice out. We could even host a mock tournament if we have enough people! And if we want to go any further, the Civic Center has two rinks. So if we got even more people interested, we could host open skating for those who aren’t in the tournament or interested in curling, just to give more options. :>

    – Cons –

    – The curling arena is in Willmar, MN which is approximately two hours west of Minneapolis.
    – There may have to be an entrance fee, perhaps 5 dollars or more depending on the cost. The more participants, the lower the cost, ideally. (Unless we get lucky and the club owner decides to just reserve a day for free, then the cost could be going towards ordering pizza.)
    – Fursuits + the nature of curling + ice = accidents waiting to happen.

I’ve pitched the idea to my boyfriend, so it’s kind of out there, but I haven’t addressed it to his parents or the club owner. I just wanted to see if anyone would be interested before I contact some people, since it is a lengthy drive for some. If we can get a spot reserved, the earlier the better. But for now, nothing is set in stone. (ahhhahha get it? get it?)

Thoughts? Opinions? Anything else to add?

2/6/ 14 EDIT : Found out that it’s $130 per hour to rent the curling ice. Don’t know if that is negotiable or not. I have yet to discuss deeper with people.

I asked my boyfriend’s parents for some other possibilities. There is usually open public curling on Saturdays charging at $3 per person until 9pm, but they tend to give large groups a few extra hours past closing time. Fursuiting (aside from possible dangers) would not be an issue and will not be required for this event. In fact, I think families and the curling club would love to see the costumes! Its a great opportunity to advertise MNFurs too.

I would have to contact the Civic Center to see the rate to rent open skating in the other rink for those who cannot get a spot on the curling lanes or do not want to curl. I was told they have open skating on Sundays, but they could make some exceptions later on in the season when they are ready to take down the ice. This usually happens around late February, early March. There was also talk of wanting to sled in addition to all these cold winter games. While there are a bunch of sledding spots around Willmar, the closest one to the Civic Center is a hill in the back of the High School, about 3-4 blocks away. The next closest hill that I enjoy would be near the Ridgewater college campus, about a 5 minute drive from the Civic Center.

Generally speaking doing a “per person” rate IS the way to go.

This event would be classified as a “class III” event (We have a guide in WIP which explains what a class III, II and I event are… But its not posted quite yet) meaning that MNFurs can help you out with advertizement but we won’t be providing you financial re-imbursement (which would be a class II event). Class II events are a lot more complicated… talk to me in private sometime and I can explain it to you 🙂

In short this means if you did a rental that $130 would be on YOU. Doing a $3 per person as the public rate makes it not only cheaper for the individual for a smaller group but also alleviates your headache of being responsible for said payment. Plus as you noted there can be positive aspects of public performance so long as the private establishment is ok with the aspect of costumers at the venue – this can sometimes be a very touchy subject.

If you would like help/ guidance running the event or would like MNFurs to announce it e-mail the Events team: [email protected] and one of us will get back to you. Please note we ask for a one month notice on posted events. However… since its been fairly slow and there is not much happening in the community until Mid/Late March we might be able to get you advertized with a 2-3 week notice.

Else you are more then welcome to promote and advertize your event here; it seems you already have a good deal of interest gathered.
