yes yes I know I am rather “late to the party” about posting this sort of stuff but here goes nothing…
As a Panelist:
Initially the thought of 9:30 AM panels Saturday and Sunday morning was unappealing as I expected few to show up (morning after rave/dance and morning of check-out) HOWEVER the turnouts for both ended up better than expected (15 for my Sat. Panel and 5 for my Sunday Panel)
However I did notice that most people tended to wander in a 10:00 to 10:30 wereas I started the panels around 9:30 , I think it might be worthwhile to consider pushing panel start times up to 10 AM if not 10:30 AM for 2015 so those early morning panels start as those up and about starts to increase.
As far as room set up I had no issues, and had FM volunteers and staff helping with this which was very pleasing and helpful to me and I want to commend the convention for this, as this was the first Con I was a panelist at were I actually had volunteers and staff coming into the room moving and making sure the chairs and tables were set up to my liking.
I do hope to bring both panels back next year.
As a Volunteer:
I had a good experience, the set up was a nice way to earn hours and overall the process to record and turn in hours was smooth and efficient, the only qualm persay I have is that it wasn’t until around 5 or 6 PM that I was told I needed to grab the volunteer sheet, since the Chair, Kellic, was running around making sure everyone was getting one.
My suggestion for this would be to make sure the people running set up in various area’s get some sheets ahead of time before set up so as people come and help they can get sheets and not have the Con chair running around to make sure people have their sheets.
As a Hotel Guest:
The Rooms were ok (small bathroom’s though), the staff was helpful when requested for stuff, and I felt I had a overall “good” experience with the hotel.
I do understand the “no outside food” policy and it was a bit annoying during Pathfinder’s that we had to take it to 1 of the players rooms to eat, but I get it though and next year I hope those running such games will make sure to include 15-20 minute “breaks” for meals like that since we cannot game and eat in there.
As a Sponsor:
Ok, I know you probably heard this one a few times but the sponsor’s brunch.. I know alot of people (myself included) hardly felt like that was a brunch. Personally it wouldn’t have been too had if there was some hard-boiled eggs or waffles there in addition to what was there.
As far as the rest I had positive remarks, the T-shirt was nice, as was the compass, and the different badge that sponsors got.
As a Con-Goer:
Much praise for the convention, it was a huge success and I thought it went off wonderfully in things working, as other’s have mentioned it hardly felt like a “year 1” con and had a feel of a seasoned convention to it. For it’s size there was a good amount of panels and other stuff to do, the dealer room / artist alley / etc was nice and I felt that in terms of “stuff” the first year of Furry Migration certainly surpassed what most would expect from a 1st year con.
As far as suggestion’s here I would have liked to see a bit more done with the “Dead Dog” party on Sunday, if there was extra Hot Dogs or other “real” foods from ConSuite I would have loved to see it served at the party and maybe even add some stuff.
I was happy the gaming area stayed open to 3 PM and certainly if it is in the budget of the convention to keep that room open longer (if only for board gaming) it would be appreciated, however I do understand the restraints of being a “small” convention.
Having spent most of my time in Registration — I would suggest better signage. People were confused as to where to enter the registration line. Went well Thursday night when there weren’t many people, but the rest of the weekend was frustrating (to me).I had a GREAT time!!
Overall, I thought it went really well.
Food choices/snacks for those who are wheat-free or more conscious of what we ingest might be something to consider. I brought fruit and veggies which went amazingly well in the “staff/Volunteer lounge” and the ConSuite.
