Hi everyone! I’ve been a furry for around 7 months now and I still can’t come up with an original name for my Fursona! It’s been Jack for a while but I recently switched it to wolfy, but now I’m thinking of switching it again! I also can’t decide between a wolf, wusky or something different. Any ideas or stories would be appreciated!

Well you could always grab a fantasy name generator and hit refresh a couple hundred times until something strikes your fancy.

You can look up words that describe you in other languages with something like google translate.

You can just pick an English word you like (hi I’m Snowsong, mostly just Snow these days).

For extra credit, pick an English word and mis-spell it.  My little wolf pup plush is Shayde (shade).

I think you shouldn’t feel bad for wanting to change your fursona name. I totally understand how hard it is to pick a name. As I see it, you’re trying to select something to partially represent you and partially represent another personality derived from you. If you need to change it to anything else and give it a test run… do so! There shouldn’t be an pressure to force you to commit to a name until you know it feels right.

Best of luck. I find picking names is always the hardest task.

Take your time. There’s no pressure to get the right name as fast as possible.

could go with something related to what inspired you.

for me it was the Yatagarasu and the bird-man of Alcatraz.  Now I’m the Bird-man NAMED Alcatraz!

I don’t find it odd to have mundane names for fursonas. ^_^ Jack is a good name.

I personally feel like its a good idea to steer away from names that have the animal type in them, because they tend to be really common. There are a lot of people with ‘fox’ as part of their name, or ‘dog’ for example.

If you’re a social fur and going to a lot of events with face-to-face interactions with people, I would very highly suggest a name that’s easy for you and others to pronounce and/or doesn’t sound weird to introduce yourself by. Being a furry is so integrated into my life that I have friends who talk about me to their non-furry friends or family, and its easier for both of us that my name is pretty simple as Blue. Same if I go to a store, or talk to staff somewhere, or anything like that, where I have to introduce myself and want to use my furry name. A cool fantasy name is great online, but IRL, I have just found it easier to have something simpler to wear and to have friends with names that aren’t terribly strange when I have to tell a non-furry about this friend I have who I don’t actually know their real name.

TL:DR – I think its best to go about it like you’re naming a kid, or something. Find a baby name site or anything with cool, but unusual names, and pick something that sounds like a real name. Its definitely a good investment and you can find some neat ones with neat meanings. (simpler names are also easier for people to spell and remember, which also makes life easier) You’re also more likely, I think, to find something that a bunch of people aren’t already using.

You know, a discussion came up during the picnic that reminded me distinctly of this post.

It was a discussion about what furry is and isn’t, and the point came up that you don’t need a fursona or a furry handle to be a furry.  So don’t feel compelled to write a character just for the sake of having one, do what you wanna do.
