It has been a long road to get here, it seems.
About two years ago at the age of 31 I stumbled onto my favorite show, Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers. I had completely forgotten them, and I started uncovering some repressed memories I had of getting bullied tremendously as a kid. They were my friends growing up that I could come home to each day.
At the same time, I gradually discovered that I was attracted to other guys. That was a big problem for me, as I was raised in a very conservative Christian household and it was considered a grave sin. Although this cost me some friends and relatives and I almost took my life in the process, my immediate family and most of my close friends accepted me as I learned to accept myself.
At the same time I also made some new friends on a Rescue Rangers forum, and I had to pick an avatar. I chose a wolf, as for the longest time I was fascinated by them, even as a young child. They are majestic creatures, deeply intelligent and both loners as well as part of a pack. As I became more comfortable with my sexuality, I gradually started to incorporate my love of wolves into my personality. My friends started to call me a wolf. I referred to myself as a wolf. I started to draw for the first time and not only drew my chipmunk friends but wolves as well. I am starting to draw my fursona, in fact.
I started dating for the first time this summer and was amazed at how quickly I told my future boyfriend about what I termed my wolf side. I started to flirt with him with little text barks and he even calls me his fluffy wolf, which I find incredibly affectionate and heartwarming to hear. I had an urge to buy a tail to wear (it’s on order!) and then a few weeks ago I said to myself “Hmmm. I guess I’m a furry too!”
I had heard of furries years ago, but I dismissed them as messed up perverts, just like how I was very homophobic until recently. How ironic that I am now a member of both communities. I’ve had to learn a lot of humility and grow up very fast. Unfortunately all my furry friends are not local, so I decided to look around today and found this group.
For the first time in my life, I yearn to be myself in all aspects of my humanity. I simply wish to find some new friends who I can be myself with and have some fun with too. It is also my hope that I can support others to be themselves because it is only by doing that can one be truly happy and alive.
That is my long winded way of saying hello!
