Hi there everyone. I’m having problems with my Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition 2. I just can’t play my Playstation games in good quality at all. The frame rate picture and sound is all messed up and I just don’t know what to do. I can’t tell if it’s something with the component cables or the HDMI cord, but I just can’t get it in good looking quality. I just want to record video game footage to use with let’s plays and I didn’t think that setting up would be so difficult. If anyone could help me in any way, showing me preferably,  I would be very grateful for it.

I used to have an HDPVR myself. Usually these issues are with the hardware but as a precaution I’d go and reinstall any software you use for the thing just in case. Next step, if it’s still messing up, make sure all cords – particularly the component cables/HDMI cables – are plugged in securely and in the proper slots. A good way to check this is to flip them, so the end that’s currently going into the TV is going into the PVR and vice versa. After that I’d recommend using a spare set of cables (as the cables could be bad) if you have them and the picture is STILL messing up. The last step before calling it kaput is checking your TV settings. Sometimes the PVR signal will mess up if the proper output isn’t being put through (the game console might have to be under 720p, 1080i, 1080p, etc, and might have to have extended color ranges turned off, that sort of thing) and if the TV isn’t reading the proper channel (every TV is different, so just go into the menu and play with it a bit, and make sure you don’t have component cables – the red green blue red white set – going into the composite slots – the yellow red white set – and that sort of thing). If aaaaall of that doesn’t fix your problem, it would appear there’s definitely a mechanical issue with the Hauppauge HDPVR itself. If this is the case you can try calling Hauppauge support and see if you can get a replacement or a fix, or you may have to get a new capture card.

I, like I said, used to have one (I’m pretty sure it still works), but I’ve since switched to El Gato (the El Gato HD60 in my case). I can easily recommend that if you end up in the market for a new capture card and want a good one. I should also mention that some Hauppauge HDPVRs have a problem with deteriorating framerates as they get older. Mine doesn’t quite get a full 30 FPS anymore, and it could never record higher than 1080i in the first place, so I more or less had to get a new card.

Anyway, hope I helped a little, and I can answer further questions if needed.

Well I think that I might need a new capture card. As I said earlier it displays my Playstation 2 fine but when I tried to play my Playstation 1 games, it would look bad with both the frame rate and the sound, so I don’t think that there’s a problem with the cables.

If your PS2 works fine maybe the PS1 is the issue, not the capture card.

Also, I should have mentioned – the HD60 I have is HDMI only. Great for last and current gen, not so much for anything older than that.
