I was new to Furries and all the big Cons and Meets seemed to be 10,000 (sometimes literally) miles away. So, I just looked up any Minnesota Furry Meet-Ups and I found this site! I hope I can go to someWelcome to the community!
In addition to all of our year round programming, we also have our convention:
Hello to you!!! I feel the same way with cons! I’m in Fargo and the nearest is the Minneapolis con. 🙁 I wouldn’t mind going someday but I’d like to go when I know people there! Also, your sona pic is really adorable!Hiya! :3 Welcome to the local group fellow newbie.~Rivet Ringtail Tanuki~
@Jecksy Thanks a bunch! I might want to try and go, but I need to know people in order to do so. I’m not sure if my parents would like wandering around there, but they’d most likely be fine with me going to the Furry Migration with people I know and can trust. So, I have to go to meet ups to make friends and get to know people, but I need to find a transportation too from my sister so it’s all one big loop of access. 🙁 😛@Rivet Ringtail Glad to be here!
@Aerak I’m hoping to go to the Furry Migration and it’s not too far, I just have to get to know some more people first@H. Foxxy Hallo
Best way to meet people is to show up. My advice for parents is get them to come with you to an Oval Meet or to the Spring Picnic in May. There will be MN Furs board members and convention staff willing to chat ears off about what we do and how we operate to foster a safe and fun environment. It is nice informal and a nice way for us to give a good impression.
[Disclaimer: I work with the convention as a co-head of photography and not a MNFurs Board member. I leave that job to better folks than I. :)]
@Mouring The thing that I’m worried about is that my Parents won’t like Furries, (I don’t know yet and they don’t know) so I don’t know if I should tell them and get them to drive me… I REALLY want to go to the Spring Picnic, and am open that day. Do you think I should tell my parents and ask?Do they like Anime, Sci Fi, Art, and theatre? If so, I doubt they’ll have much a problem. What ends up being polarizing/confusing is the cosplay. You can point people to Anime or Sci Fi cosplay and most geeks or semi-geeks can pick out a TV or Movie character. Since furry cosplay isn’t driven by existing content it makes people confused (My dad’s wife is one of those people so I’ve stopped talking or showing her pictures of the studio I do for Furry Migration).
Franky, I’d encourage you and your parents to join us at the Spring Picnic. As stated a lot of the non-profit board of directors and convention staff will be there to talk if they want more information about the fandom in general and MNFurs/Furry Migration specifically. Plus we have a fair number of parents part of the community that they can chat with as well.
It also is informal enough if they honestly don’t feel comfortable and want to leave they can hurting people’s feelings there.
@Mouring I’m in lots of Theater, so they like that. I’ve never talked to them about Cosplay, but I think it might work! Thank you so much for the advice!Hey there Farryn and welcome to the MNFurs community! My name is Drake and it’s nice to meet you. *Paw shake*
