Heya, saw a thread on the picnic and wanted to share my thoughts except it was locked out.  If the old location is such a hassle (plus from what I understand is much smaller), then why not French Regional or Blackhawk?  Both were really great locations and a lot of people seemed to like either one.  Would love to see it at either or again personally.  Anyone else have an opinion / thought that could be shared?

Black Hawk is a fantastic park, works well for large group gatherings, and has always been a blast.  Bit of a drive, but well worth it if it’s on a weekend.

I liked French too, just as accessible, with similar amenities.

Yup!  I like the thought behind Black Hawk cuz it also reached out and made an event more accessible to furs that were further south.  I think that was the original thought, too, so that it wan’t always north.

Interesting perspective, I can remember a few short years ago people where up in arms that the picnics weren’t being held in St Paul.

However, to put context around Kellic’s post. Some here would remember (I don’t I had to be reminded) back in 2004 the SNC Furs started the annual picnic tradition. SNC Furs pretty much morphed into MNFurs. So taking Kellic’s post at face value it is a “belated 10 year” celebration of that event.

So the announcement is delayed. It’s a special thing. I’m sure we can suffer with a bit of delay for memory row. I doubt this is a common venue for our group.

I have no opinion on which park it’ll be at. I just want to know when and where it is being held so that I can get it on the calendar. I would hate to miss out because something more important gets scheduled for that day. I live out in Esko (two hours from the cities) so no matter which park it’s at is a bit of a drive for me.

    From personal experience –

    For parks and timing

A lot of the twin cities park district doesn’t come on line until January/February time frame – they are more concern with the winter months than summer.

Also a lot of times we can’t get 100% confirmation that we have the space until 2 months out. We have had in the past where we get the initial confirmation but then get told later that we do not have the space.

Kellic has been working hard to get an exact time and have confirmation of it. Be patience this is probably going to be the most in advance announced Spring Picnic I have ever seen. He wants that it just he wants to make sure that we are having one there first. He’s putting a lot of his time and money into making this happen.

    About parks in general

From an event running French is a much harder park area to work with from scheduling to working with their rules – they have more stricter rules. Eagan parks in general is much easier to work with from past experience. Also Eagan parks are a lot cheaper than most in the Twin Cities proper area. But that is in general the park districts that are further away from the direct center of twin cities the lower the cost.

But each park district is it’s own interesting rules and hassles to deal with. I’m hoping we see some other ones tried in future events. It just take time to find them and make sure they will work for an all day event like our Spring Picnic is.

I love both Blackhawk and French Regional… I guess that makes sense seeing as how both the picnics I had a hand in running happened at them XD. Blackhawk has a kitchen and volleyball court and just a really good layout in general. French has amazing walking paths and a really cool playground.

But let’s not forget Hidden Falls. Our group started there. The space under the pavilions might be a little tight but there’s plenty of space for volleyball, and there is a hidden waterfall if you can find it! Plus riverboats from Harriet Island in St Paul go down the river every hour which can lead to some funny fursuit moments. And for after parties, you’ve got Chatterbox a few blocks away – which if you haven’t been there, is a gamer bar with some awesome food and microbrews.

Thanks for everyone who is putting in their two cents.  The efforts of anyone trying to put forward their efforts into planning something is certainly appreciated.  The point of this post was to get people involved in a discussion.  Personally my opinion is different than that of the current selection but that doesn’t mean I speak for everyone.  But if the community is good with the location regardless of the lack or presence of amenities / space then all the better.  🙂  And of course availability is always a concern.  However there is a community.  An event post doesn’t have to be the final decision.  In something like this, especially if there is difficulty with making it work, starting a discussion thread to keep people abreast is good for everyone.  For planners it allows an inlet from the community to provide help and support when they know what is going on.  For the community it allows us to know what is going on and the process of what is occurring, and also answers a lot of questions that would be generally asked over and over.  We def look forward to social events and certainly want to be involved.  Again I really only speak for myself but it could be assumed that many people are of a similar mindset.  :3
