The sun was now only peaking over the horizon. As the night sky began covering the canopy of this sacred place, the temperature began to drop to almost sub-zero weather. Tamayoshi knew, feeling the change in weather that he needed to find a place to rest his cold and tired body.

As he ventured further away from the shore and into the forest, he found a space beneath a pine tree and began to settle himself into a comfortable position. He paced in a circle, as a cat or dog would do, and finally dropped into a position to sleep.

As his body slowly began to stiffen and become one with the earth beneath him, the dark of night became distant in his eyes. He now only saw nothing but darkness. He could not feel the cold or the worn out feelings he had before. Just as the feelings slowly crept away, the darkness that had entered his vision instantly became a clear, blue, sunny sky. It was as if he were flying in the daytime sky and floating on the white clouds he had ignored for too long. As pleasant as this sight was, it did not last long. His body began to dip in the sky, the clouds parted, and the sight of Superior’s water came into view below him. He could not control his body as started to soar toward the surface of the lake. As he thought he might splash into her water, he only glided across the surface, feeling the cold water splash droplets onto his warm, furry face. It was a refreshing feeling that brought a small smile to his face. He went further across the water, until a giant rock face came into view in front of him. He was gliding so fast, it seemed as if he were going to smash into the side of it. But the uncontrollable feeling of his body in this strange world whisked him up the side he thought he would crash into.

His body soon brought him to the top of the rock. All around, the ground was covered in mossy green, white colored rocks and boulders, and a few pine and spruce trees that brought a peaceful feeling to the area. As Tamayoshi began studying this new place, he found a wolf lying underneath a pine tree. This wolf was of the natural grey top fur and white underbelly. It was panting and looking toward the forest as if it were watching and waiting for something.

Tamayoshi did not want to meet this wolf, since he had trouble with most wolves because of his fur. For a strange reason, something inside Tamayoshi told him to go toward this wolf and stay. He walked forward, but kept his distance and tried to remain outside of its field of vision. The wolf was a beautiful female who had a small cut on her face in the shape of a crescent moon. Tamayoshi was so fascinated that this wolf was not only beautiful, but somehow familiar. He could not figure out how, since he did not know of any wolves in his life. As he marveled at her beauty, her sight fell onto Tamayoshi. The hypnosis he had on her broke and he began positioning himself for a confrontation. That is if one were to arise. The wolf began to arise and walk toward Tamayoshi. His defenses intensified. As she walked closer, he started to growl and snarl. She soon was so close to him that she was almost brushing against his fur. This was his moment to attack, but he soon lessened his guard, because he felt something strange. The wolf was no longer focusing her sights on him. It was as if she no longer had any interest in him. As he felt this, he relaxed and let her pass by him.

She went to the edge of the rock face and stared at the lake. Tamayoshi began to feel an urge to join her, but that would have to wait. Her focus quickly changed from the water to the forest as did Tamayoshi’s. A large pack of wolves began to creep out of the woods. It was a small pack, numbering around ten or so. Most had matted fur and visible scars from fights they had with one another and prey they wanted to capture. A small group of them were dragging a carcass of what looked like a deer toward him and the female.

Tamayoshi knew it was time for him to leave before the real trouble started. He knew he could most likely take the entire pack himself, but as he had learned from his past it was best to avoid any trouble before it begins. As he slowly crept away, a familiar sound was herd in the pack and of the members focused their gaze on the female and him; the sound of a growling stomach. He could not tell whom they were looking at, but knew they were both guilty of hunger. He feared now was the time to really defend himself, but again, something told him to not do so.

“Well, Inaabi is going to have a litter”, a member of the pack chimed in. “The pups must want their share, too.”

Every wolf was now erupting in a sea of smiles and laughter. As the laughter began to disappear, they moved the deer closer to her and began to eat. Tamayoshi was now confused as to why he was seeing all of these strange things that now seemed all too familiar. Before he could even think, the sound of a grumbling stomach was now louder than before. He looked around and wondered whose stomach it was, and soon realized it was his own. He closed his eyes in pain and soon herd the familiar sounds of the night.

He opened his eyes and saw that he was back under the tree he laid under before experiencing the strange dream he had. The forest was darker now than it was before the dream and the moon was shining brightly on the lake and giving off a silvery glimmer. As he marveled at the night view and continued to think about his dream, his stomach began to growl again. He knew his body needed to be fed before the mission, so he lifted his awakened body and began to walk further into the forest in search of a meal.

Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Till your good is better, and your better is the best.
