Hello furry friends. I’ve just gotten into the furry scene and would love to make a furry suit, or at least try to make something. I see there are people who make fursuits but they cost like ~$2k, and I don’t have that money. I was wondering the best way to start making a fursuit or commission someone in Minnesota. Thanks.

Well, I am not sure if it helps but there are a few local makers around here! I for one make costumes in the 1.5 – 2 k bracket for fullsuits. Let me know if you have more questions! Welcome to the group we are so happy to have ya! <3Feel free to check out my work at http://www.facebook.com/saltysuits, or http://www.saltysuits.webs.com. You can also find my work on FA and DA!
Some local fursuit makers:blue-rabbit-studios.com (myself and Alkora)
Sushinom (Jacek)
Phoenix Nest (Phoenixwolf).
ByCats4Cats.
There’s Salty too, who’s already been mentioned.
If buying a suit is too much for you, there are a ton of tutorials online for how to make them. Just jump in and start experimenting. Otherwise some of us can be found at the local furmeets and I’m sure anyone would be happy to give you some pointers.

So I ended up spending $100 on fur and other poly plastic materials… I have to still buy a few yards of other fur colors >.> . This is gonna be an expensive hobby.Music makes the world go around!
I would start with trying to get a reference sheet for your character then look into making a duck-tape dummy for your measurements . I would look into if you want a partial or full suit too?Electronic Music - EDM, Industrial, Synth
Nocturnal - You will rarely see me during the day, I work nights
Demi-Sexual - Fun first, flirt later
Foodie - Food Adventures constantly, not a fan of fish thoughI suggest ByCats4Cats. The owner welcomed me to meet him and see his process to answer my fursuit questions one on one. Really great experience. Also, not fursuit, but something I supported on Kickstart and I’m loving ’em for casual imagination: Faux Paws socks! (Plus, nobody at work has to know if I’m a dragon, horse, or snow leopard.) Bonus that they are very comfortable and machine wash safe (so far in my experience).
I know Fedora Eagle has been doing furry parts for us though I don’t know if she does full suits. I THINK she does but it’s never come up in conversation."The problem is not that there are too many idiots in the world, the problem is the distribution of lightning."
- Mark TwainJust a suggestion if your just starting out suiting some times starting out with a second hand suit would be a cheaper alternative. Ive seen many partials go for about 200-500 on furbuy. I just wanted to throw that out there…Another update: I purchased more fur off of Amazon. I am making the fursuit head first. I have a character drawn up roughly (my avatar). I have a friend locally who made his own suit and he has been helpful for answering questions. There are lots of internet resourses available for me. I will see how the head goes and then update you all. Would you like some progress pics?Music makes the world go around!
