MNFurs at Como Zoo 2016 Zoo Boo

It’s almost that time of year again! Como Zoo is gearing up for their annual ZooBoo event, and so are we! Volunteering for ZooBoo is a great opportunity for MNFurs to contribute to the community and have fun doing it! If you’re not familiar, ZooBoo offers a way for younger children to experience Halloween by providing a safe and less scary alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. All proceeds benefit the Como Zoo and Conservatory.

We will announce the dates in October and times as soon as Como Zoo lets us know (plan on arriving by 4 pm and staying until 9 pm).

We are handling registration for Como ZooBoo and if you want to join sign up at MNFurs Volunteer Signup For ZooBoo 2016 (Link coming soon). Both fursuiters and handlers will be needed! This is a very fursuit friendly event, but everyone is invited to help and join us in helping out this year’s event. If you’re planning to attend or have any questions, don’t hesitate to let us know.

As a minor change from prior years, we are also looking tentatively for other assistance than just suiters and handlers. Additionally, we might be capping attendance at 50 this year. We will let you know as more information becomes available.

Anyone know if you have to bring your suit to orientation and where it all is being held? Sorry. I got the email but I forgot where I put it and what to do.

You should, they check costumes to make sure they’re kid friendly, and it goes the same for the suit too 🙂

What do I do if it turns out that I can’t make it to one of the days that I scheduled. I just got a promotion at work, and I absolutely have to work the whole day on the 22nd because of that promotion. I can make it to all my other days, i’m just not certain what I should do for that one day.

I would just make a quick call to Como and explain your situation and they can pass it on to the people in charge of schedling with ZooBoo to take you off that day.

    Also, congratulations on your promotion!

@AutumnFawn You should at least bring the head of your fursuit to orientation so that they’ll know what it looks like, and I believe orientation is in one of the meeting rooms upstairs of the visitor center (When I went to my orientation last year, I know it was held in a room where the costumes the zoo provides are stored for ZooBoo; there’s at least a brief Powerpoint presentation held during orientation). There should be someone there to guide you and tell you where to go once you get to your orientation. 🙂

Thanks everyone for your interest in ZooBoo! Registration has now ended, and at this point you should have already heard from Como with regards to details on volunteering and parking, but we will be sending out an email within the next couple days to all participants to confirm availability and expectations.

    See you all soon!

    Ack! I went to my orientation but they didn’t really explain much to me, at least about being a handler. I almost forgot it was today, what do I dooooo? Do I meet the MNFurs group in that orientation room and then get assigned a suiter to travel with? Do I need to borrow a suit from the zoo? I don’t know! ;~;

Seafa, first thing you will want to do is head to the second floor of the main visitor center.  If the door is locked, the front desk is close by and you can tell them that you are volunteering for ZooBoo and someone will open the door.  Once upstairs there will be Como staff members present and ask them where the MNFurs changing room is and they can lead the way.

As for your other questions – Since you are a handler you will not need a suit.

As for being a handler, it’s an easy task.  In your assigned group periodically ask suiters if they need water, need a break from the crowds, & make sure kids are not pulling on any parts of the suiter.  A lot of the times when there is a break in the crowds, I will walk in front of everyone and do a quick thumbs up or down to see how everyone is doing.

A schedule of where everyone will be will be up on a big white board.  There you will know what group you are in.

I have been a handler and suiter at ZooBoo for 3-4 years now so please do not hesitate to ask me more questions here and in person.  Just ask for Drake if anything comes up.  😀

    Late Question.

I’m planning to go on the 30th, but i did not sign up at all. But i do see that the public can wear suits.. So with that being said, Would I be able to walk around in my suit (there will be someone with me if i do).

Note. I am hopping that my Neices and Nephew would be able to go and Ill be walking around with them and my parents. if they cannot go then ill be going with freinds.

I also do not want to screw anything up if I do show up in suit.

Spidy, I do not see an issue with this, as a matter of fact, I saw someone else in what looked like a fursuit last night passing by.  Again, almost all families are in costumes so I say join in on the fun.

As for seeing if you still can signup, I would first start by sending a quick e-mail to [email protected] and then questions can be asked from there with Como staff.

I would like to go and help. Most likely on the 29th. I will have to check with my work to get the day off and then I will sign up.
