In my months in the fandom I have heard many interesting names of peoples’ fursonas. I’ve always wondered where the names came from and what they mean.

For me, the name Ochindiki comes from a portmanteau of two Russian words:

    Очень (och’en’) : very (adverb)

дикий (d’eekey) : wild (adjective, nominative masculine)

So my name literally means very wild. This isn’t because Ochik is a wild, out of control dog that walks on two paws. He simply enjoys a good time with good people. The wild is commonly misunderstood because we live in a misunderstanding world. The name sums what I think most of the fandom; community and misunderstood.

So how did you choose your name? What does it mean to you?

I picked my first name from reading Julie’s Wolf Pack (3rd book of the Julie’s Wolves trilogy).

Snowsong being snow-colored fur and a melodious howl.

My last name means shooting star.  Silverfall.

I picked mine because my character is a mix of a deer and a coyote so I started thinking of all the names that he could be and I found out that I could call him a deeoyote (dee-oh-tee). So I was like “huh, kinda sounds like d-o-t. Let’s make that his name” so his name is D.O.T but most people just call him “Dot”.

Taters was and is a real life nickname of mine. So since the blue unicorn in the picture is me, it’s still valid to call him Taters.

Where the nickname itself came from is much too long a story.

Strange enough, I fabricated my fursona’s name back when I was introduced into the fandom in ’04-’06. (Don’t recall the exact year; Just remember I was during my Highschool ‘Haze’.) I stumbled across a Furrymuck called Furcadia a few years beforehand, and with it, a little known online web series called Trouble’s Tales. There was a Squirrel in the story named RedFlame, which I thought back at the time was a pretty rad name, so I mixed it up slightly, changing Flame to Flare.

The name is comprised of two traits I possess; My red hair (of course), and my fiery personality. I’ve been told I am very expressive, as if there’s a fire burning inside that flares up now and then with my emotions. Heh, I suppose the name fits really well then, since I never really considered the second part until it was brought to light by others.

A little secret to my FA account’s Username: I really big into the Lord of the Rings, and the Elvish language (Sindarin). During a bored spell, I did some research, and found out the Sindarin translation for Redflare is Naurandir. I now go by either name, though most know me as Redflare.

(Also, because it’s been brought up before.. NO, I did not steal my name from the English artist. I didn’t even know he existed, let alone all the “Famous Furs” that everyone talks about, until I came up here.)

I was looking for some thing to call myself when I joined the MNFurs web sight, I could not think of anything and went with a screen name I was using in Erobricks, intending to use it as a place holder.  People started to know me, and refur to me as LegoFox, and I went with it

I picked LGslam because it’s was a gamertag that I use alot and also it’s an acronym.

I lost the original translation of it when I first created it back when I was younger. But now it’s translated as this: the L and G represent my actual name, “Lyle Guerard.” Guerard is pronounced as Gerard, the u is silent. The s, l, a, m stand for how my game play is: Stealthy, Long-range, Analytical, Marksman.

That’s pretty much what the reason behind my name LGslam is and shall be.

I’ve always been a fan of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern books, and as part of her naming conventions in that universe, the dragons all have names ending in -th. So, nerdy person that I am, I wondered what my dragon’s name would be if I was in the Pern universe, and out came Kizith.

When I became a part of the furry community, I couldn’t really think of a unique name, so I trundled out Kizith and – surprise – it worked! Not only that, but coincidentally my last name has a Z in it as well! Must be fate ;>

In solitary moments magpies will perch on a branch and mutter soft soliloquies of whines and squeals and chatterings, oblivious to what goes on around them. It is one of those things, I suppose, intelligence now and then does, must in fact now and then do, must think, must play, must imagine, must talk to itself. What, finally, intelligence could be for: finding your way back.

    Mine is surprisingly lame.

Kane was the name of my first real D&D character, a lawful-evil variant on the Paladin.

When I signed up for Second Life, it was back in the days where you were required to have a user-submitted first name and a randomly generated assigned last time. I just used the name of my D&D character.

While I was on SL I found out about sergals and purchased myself a sergal avatar, that guise became associated with that name and here we care today. : >

I used to animate a character, a baboon, I called Fritter.  No baboons in Second Life, so I became a Meerkat and stuck with it.  Enzyme just sounded cute.

Drake (or Drake McCloud) came along several years ago and the fursona was Fox McCloud’s brother.  My sona use to be a red fox, but later down the road I changed him to a silver fox instead.  Later I got tired of his sona having a Star Fox background so I changed it dramatically when I joined MNFurs back in 2012.

Luminesse is pretty much short for “Luminescent”, which means “Bright” and is applied to light-up, blacklight-sensitive or glow-in-the-dark things, which Lumi constantly wears and occasionally hands out.

My username, Twensy, came from the fact that my favorite number is 27.

I’ve always like my sandwiches with extra condiments so I picked the gamertag SauceySandwich, I just choose to continue to use it since having multiple nicknames would be hard to keep track of. People often think because of my drinking that I am Sauce but its way more basic. 😉

    So I stole it.
