Vintage, if you decide to approach Judy, you can say that you have an anthro-based or animal costume and have done public performing. This would be the easiest way of approaching your situation…I will also point out to never use terms like fursuits, suiting, etc. These are unknown terms to persons outside the fandom and may/can come off as intimidating.
Again, if allowed to do this, be mindful of the rules while inside the coffee shop.
You mentioned Furry Migration being your first ‘get-together’…I believe you will have lots of fun as there is much being planned for the convention.
It will be fun to meet you and talk with you at some point. If you ever decide to come to one of our bi-weekly meets, just ask for Drake and someone will point me out.
No problem and again, with any questions/concerns, you can post, make new threads, or send any of us a PM.

If one decides to go public fursuiting, a half dozen going out in public shouldn’t cause any trouble. Sort of the safety in numbers rule. If you go out and your the lone suiter, people might think something is going on.Have a couple people with you. With cameras in hand. It should be obvious to anyone that a photo shoot of some kind is going on. I’ve done photo shoots for suiters in a city park. Never had any trouble as again, it was obvious that a photo shoot was happening.I agree with Oswan. You definitely want enough of a group to feel like “oh, this is a thing” and as though there’s some semblance of organization.Public, municipal spaces (like parks) are generally the best venue for this sort of thing because they’re distinctly NOT private property. A heads-up is still a nice courtesy, but you’re unlikely to be bothered by the park unless you’re acting in a way that makes people uncomfortable.
Obviously if you receive permission from a privately-owned location to suit there, then you have less to worry about. You still want to behave and paint the group and the fandom in a positive light, but that’s something you should be thinking about anytime you perform in public.
